Maine Agriculture Mediation Program Webinar:
Positions vs. Interests + Storytelling & Issue ID
Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025
4:30–6:00 PM (ET) |
Online via Zoom
Presenter: Lucy Pauley is the Coordinator for the Wyoming Agriculture and Natural Resource Mediation Program. She is also a certified Farm Succession Coordinator. Lucy has over twenty years of experience mediating a wide variety of agricultural disputes and workplace conflicts. Lucy is also the mom of two teens who do not appreciate her mediation expertise.
Webinar Overview: Lucy will revisit a few foundational topics covered in our respective basic trainings. First up? Positions vs interests. Positions are the stances you take on a topic. Interests are what caused you to take that stance. She will review the positions and interests of the mediation parties to determine what that looks like. Then Lucy and the webinar attendees will dive into some strategies to help participants/ parties identify and focus on their interests.
Next, Lucy will review storytelling and issue identification. Using her favorite mediation text, Mediation Theory & Practice by McCorkle and Reese, she'll review storytelling and discuss mediator pitfalls. The webinar will finish up by exploring how we as mediators frame the issues and help participants/ parties move towards option generation.
